I am sooooo passionate about empowering educators! In my last post, I really emphasized the importance of every teacher having access to an instructional coach. Building on that foundation, I’m thrilled to introduce you to the SIMPLE Framework.

Why the SIMPLE framework for instructional coaches with puzzle pieces

The SIMPLE Framework consists of three pillars:

Pillar 1: Simplifying Instructional Coaching with the S.I.M.P.L.E. Blueprint

When I first transitioned into the role of an instructional coach, it came with no direction or handbook. I had a principal who really didn’t understand the role and a district coach who just told me to “make teachers better.” It was no fault of theirs, the role was pretty new and no one really understood what was supposed to happen. The district came across some federal dollars for the position and I was just lucky enough to be thrown into the role.

Coaching can seem so complicated when you haven’t had the appropriate professional development and many struggle to just get started. It took me YEARS to figure this thing out and I vowed if I had the opportunity, I would share with instructional coaches worldwide that we can make getting started with coaching SIMPLE!

The S.I.M.P.L.E. Blueprint is a comprehensive toolkit for instructional coaches, providing everything needed for a successful year of coaching. The blueprint starts by setting a vision so that instructional coaches and principals can get a clear vision and direction for the coaching role. Next, the blueprint offers strategies for introducing the role effectively, ensuring a positive start to the year.

This framework then guides instructional coaches in creating tailored action plans for each teacher’s unique needs, underscoring our belief that every teacher deserves (and needs) a coach. The blueprint elaborates on tiering teachers to offer strategic support and walks coaches through initiating effective coaching cycles.

Moreover, the S.I.M.P.L.E. Blueprint equips coaches with resources to organize and deliver engaging professional learning experiences school-wide. Pillar 2: Creating a Lasting Impact on Teaching and Learning

Our approach to instructional coaching is both structured and simple, focusing on the ‘Core 4’ components of effective teaching. These components serve as a starting point for every instructional coach in their journey with teachers.

  • Organization: Essential for any effective teacher, organizational systems streamline lesson planning, grading, classroom management, and parent communication. They lay the groundwork for instructional improvements.
  • Management & Culture: A safe, respectful classroom environment is crucial. We emphasize the importance of creating a culture where students engage actively and communicate effectively, supported by robust behavior management systems.
  • Content Delivery: Mastery of subject matter and alignment of curriculum with standards is key. Our framework helps teachers in outlining clear learning targets and ensuring that lessons, materials, and assessments are properly aligned.
  • Instructional Execution: Equipping teachers with a diverse toolkit of research-backed instructional strategies is vital. These strategies should foster deep thinking and cater to the diverse needs of students.

Pillar 3: Creating a Culture of Coaching

Instructional coaching, as an integral element of professional development, holds unparalleled promise in transforming the landscape of education. While its primary goal is to enhance teaching practices, its influence reverberates far beyond the classroom, serving as a catalyst for fostering a positive school culture. Yet, realizing its full potential requires a systemic shift in mindset, a move from viewing coaching as an intervention for struggling teachers to recognizing it as an empowerment tool for all educators.

Here’s how school leaders can make the S.I.M.P.L.E. shift to a coaching culture:

  1. Set the Vision: Before any transformation can take place, there needs to be a clear and compelling vision. School leaders must define what a coaching culture looks like, why it’s vital, and how it aligns with the school’s broader mission. This vision serves as the North Star, guiding all subsequent actions and decisions.
  2. Introduce to the Staff: Once the vision is established, introduce it to the staff. This introduction should not just be a one-time announcement but an ongoing conversation. Address concerns, share success stories, and continually emphasize the positive impact of a coaching culture on both teachers and students.
  3. Mobilize Resources: For coaching to take root, it needs support in terms of time, training, and tools. School leaders should ensure that coaches receive the necessary training and resources. If there’s no dedicated coach, consider leveraging experienced teachers or seeking external experts.
  4. Plan for Implementation: With resources in place, devise a comprehensive plan for rolling out the coaching initiative. Determine which models of coaching will be employed (e.g., one-on-one, group coaching), set clear goals, and decide on the metrics for measuring progress.
  5. Leverage Group Coaching: Recognize that not every teacher might need (or even want) intensive one-on-one coaching. Group coaching sessions can be a highly effective way of reaching a broader audience, fostering collaborative learning, and ensuring that the culture of coaching permeates throughout the school.
  6. Evaluate and Reflect: Like any initiative, it’s crucial to regularly evaluate the impact of coaching. Collect feedback, examine classroom outcomes, and determine areas of improvement. This continuous cycle of reflection and refinement ensures that the coaching initiative remains effective and relevant. In addition, building a coaching culture is not a one-time task but an ongoing endeavor. Celebrate successes, address challenges head-on, and ensure that coaching remains a central pillar of the school’s professional development strategy.

By making the S.I.M.P.L.E. shift, schools can transition from a fragmented approach to professional development to a cohesive, holistic one. In doing so, they not only enhance teaching practices but also create an environment where every educator feels valued, supported, and empowered. It’s a move from isolated growth to collective empowerment, from sporadic improvement to sustained excellence.
